The Building Healthy Communities (BHC) project has been delivered in communities in Offaly since 2004. Using a population health approach, the project promotes a community development and interagency approach to develop actions that ultimately enhance the health and wellbeing of targeted communities.
The organisations involved are Offaly Local Development Company, HSE (Dublin Mid Leinster), Offaly County Council, Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board, Offaly County Childcare Committee and Offaly Sports Partnership. Representatives from these organisations form the BHC Steering Group – the group that oversees the delivery of the project in conjunction with local communities.
The following determinants of health are used as a template for developing a wide range of locally based initiatives, which arise from prioritised needs identified by local communities:
Targeted communities are supported to prepare actions plans around these themes which are then implemented with the support of BHC agencies and other actors.
